4 Stylists Share the Building Blocks to Their Autumn Wardrobes

With the arrival of autumn comes the first layers of the new season ahead.

Lightweight knits, longer-line coats and hardy footwear become the new wardrobe staples as the temperature drops and the days become shorter.

As part of Melbourne Fashion Festival, we asked four stylists to share the building blocks to their autumn wardrobes, and the designs that remain timeless season after season.

The Outerwear Staples

As worn by Marissa and Bec of Twice Blessed

“Our favourite outfits always involve outerwear—we love to layer as it creates visual appeal, and allows you to experiment with colour, texture and dimension.
We like to keep colour themes simple and use varying fabrications to enhance the look and add intrigue. It keeps it holistically clean, but still interesting.”

The Versatile Knit Dress

As worn by Bec of Twice Blessed

“For us, a knit dress is a staple all year long. For a more sophisticated take, pair with a matching blazer, bold lip and heel. In the cooler months, try layering with a chunky knit, heavy coat and flat lug-sole boots for everyday dressing.”

The Boilersuit

As worn by Simone Farrugia

“My wardrobe is all about versatility and I love that this boilersuit feels at home in both work and evening settings. The fit and sharp structured shape is incredibly flattering—it’s hard to find a one-piece that looks as good from behind as it does from the front!”

The Leather Investment Piece

As worn by Karinda Mutabazi

“The straight cut leather pants are the hero piece in this outfit for me. This classic cut is something that you can keep in your wardrobe and pass down (if you look after them).

The key to a timeless leather pant is the lack of shine in the leather—this matte finish leather is buttery soft and super comfortable. It basically feels like you are wearing a very elegant track pant (which I am all about!).

The great thing about this outfit is that it lends itself to a wide range of footwear. It would be equally amazing paired with a loafer, boot, sandal or heel which makes it super versatile. You could swap out the larger hobo-style bag, for a more sleek clutch (leather would be a great touch to match the pants) and add a boot or a heel to turn this look into a chic evening outfit.”

The Well-Cut Blazer

As worn by Karinda Mutabazi

“A blazer or suit is a staple for me and anyone who knows me, will know I am a lover of colour! This outfit is actually really toned down for me, but I was drawn to the classic cuts, tonal layering and textural details.

I have realised that sometimes you need to have that key black staple in your wardrobe that can be used to break up the bold options—of which there are many. This boxy masculine-style blazer is the perfect layering piece for dressing up your favourite jeans or for throwing on over a skirt or dress.”
