Behind The Design: The Spanish Espadrille

The traditional Spanish espadrille has been a summer icon since the 1940s. Here we chat with Accessories Designer Kirby about our latest collection and discover the artisanal process that goes into crafting each pair.

The Factory

"When finding a factory to collaborate with, the most important thing for us was partnering with a manufacturer that was passionate about using traditional techniques."

"Established in 1978, the family owned factory is known for their true craftsmanship that blends traditional and innovative techniques to ensure quality and comfort."

The Construction Process

"The process begins with the making of the natural jute sole. The jute thread is braided and then curled into an hourglass shape using a traditional technique that makes the sole breathable and comfortable. To finish, a rubber sole is injected onto the outsole to ensure durability."

"The espadrille upper and lining are made with a beautiful mix of natural fabrications. Our Porto styles have a Spanish woven cotton upper, while the sneaker is crafted with soft suede."

"The last steps is where all the magic happens. The artisans skilfully stitch the upper onto the rope sole and finish with the classic embroidered detail at the toe and a grosgrain ribbon at the ankle."
