How to Style Winter Knitwear
As winter sets in and knitwear becomes a key element in outfitting, it’s time to consider how to style, store and care for your knits to maintain their quality for years to come.
Providing layers of warmth, colour and texture, knits are wardrobe essentials all year long, but it’s in the cooler months that they really come into their own. From fine wool foundation layers to classic cashmere sweaters, lofty vests to fluid longline cardigans, winter knitwear is versatile, comfortable and always in style.
Six knitwear essentials that will take
you through this winter and beyond
The Fluffy Knit Vest
Ideal for layering, a knit vest adds tactile interest and gentle warmth to outfits. In black or a neutral tone, it creates a classic work-wardrobe look when worn over a white shirt or simple black dress. Whether in a round neck or V-neck style, a knit vest can be paired with a T-Shirt or worn on its own for casual weekend dressing. On cooler evenings, style a knit vest with a mini skirt, tights and heels, adding a blazer or jacket as outerwear. For more relaxed occasions, a knit vest in a seasonal shade or pattern adds a playful touch to outfitting and can become the hero piece of your look.

The Zip-Front Knit
A versatile wardrobe staple, this winter knit can be styled in multiple ways. Worn with the zip open, it’s an elegant alternative to a cardigan or bomber jacket, while fastening the zip halfway creates a relaxed piece for casual occasions. For the look of a collared sweater, the zip can be fastened all the way up, and is perfect for elevating denim or for softening structured suiting in workwear outfits. Ribbing around the waistline creates a cinching effect and allows the knit to sit neatly at the waist.

The Cardigan
An enduring favourite, cardigans are available in various silhouettes, weights and lengths, meaning there is a style to suit everyone at any time of year. In a fitted, slightly cropped style, a lightweight cardigan can be paired with wide-leg or pleated trousers for the work week—wear it with a blazer and matching pant or skirt for a modern take on suiting. Longer line designs in a relaxed fit are an easy off-duty option when layered with leggings and T-Shirts, or add a belt, tailored pant and heels for dressier occasions.

The Crew Neck
A crew neck knit is a wardrobe basic that can be dressed up or down to suit various occasions. Choose one in a neutral tone and pair it with a pant in navy, black or stone for a classic, pared-back look, then add minimal gold jewellery and heels for effortless after-hours dressing. In a seasonal shade, a crew neck adds an accent to outfitting, and can be worn over a shirt in a contrasting colour or pattern for extra visual interest. When it’s a little too warm to wear a jumper but it might be needed later in the day, try wearing a crew neck tied loosely around the neck or across the body. It’s a great stand-in for a scarf, bringing warmth, colour and texture to any look.

The Rib Zip Knit
The rib zip knit has its origins in sporting attire, but can be styled for smart occasions as well. Its zip collar allows a rib zip knit to be worn with everyday basics to instantly elevate daily outfitting. Try one with sweat pants or leggings for an easy athleisure style, or take things up a level with jeans and heels. For a crisp, layered look that combines comfort and style, wear a rib zip knit over a white cotton shirt and a classic pant, and add a blazer for a contemporary take on suiting. The versatile design allows for multiple styling options—zip the collar up all the way for a chunky turtleneck look, or leave it partly open to create the appearance of a collared V-neck. Adding accessories such as scarves or simple jewellery allows for even more variety.

The Knit Dress
An effortless solution to elegant outfitting in winter, a knit dress is the perfect choice for a range of occasions. Accessorised with heels and a blazer, it’s a weekday essential, while dressing it up with tall boots and statement jewels creates an outfit that is just right for an evening out. Add a belt to create shape at the waist and alter the silhouette, or tie a sweater around the neck to layer textures and play on volume. Choose items such as a scarf and cardigan in similar hues to the knit dress for a sophisticated, tonal look, or opt for a jacket, coat or wrap in contrasting colours for visual interest.

Caring for knitwear
With proper care, knits can last for years and even decades. When cleaning knitwear, make sure to follow the instructions on the label as different yarns require different washing and drying—in particular, some fibres such as wool may shrink if washed or left soaking in hot water or when spun on a high temperature in a tumble dryer. Even lower temperatures may cause wool and other fibres to pill or felt, so it is best to air dry them.
If air-drying, knits should generally be placed out of direct sunlight and laid flat rather than hanging on a washing line. This prevents them from being pulled out of shape.
Storing your knitwear
Similarly, when storing knits, roll or fold them rather than hanging in order to maintain their shape and prevent stretching. Make sure there is nothing in the storage that could pull or snag on the yarn, such as belts or jewellery.
