Lessons on Layering Winter Textures in the Home

As the cooler weather settles in, it’s the ideal time to update decor with textures and colours designed to bring a sense of warmth into the home. Here, our Home styling team shares ideas on how to layer fabrications, shapes and tones to create welcoming spaces for winter.

“This season, the palette is based around neutrals for effortless styling, with rich jewel tones to add definition and interest. Don't be afraid to layer our warm cinnamon hues with the blue jewel colour—they work beautifully styled alone or can be mixed and matched to create a statement.”

“Bring warmth and a sense of luxury to living spaces through heavier fabrications such as boucle, faux fur and velvet, along with light and lofty pieces in alpaca and New Zealand wool. Mixing the softness of the velvet and alpaca with textures like marble helps to create a grounded feeling.”

“Cushions in different shapes and sizes can be used as styling pieces in living spaces or bedrooms. Mixing high-low fabrications also works well to create visual interest—balance a highly textured element such as the bobble cushion with throws in plush velvet or fine rib stitching.”

“Fluting and scalloped edges continue as trends in vases and decor items. For a sculptural statement, choose marble vases such as our Preston range which can be displayed as decorative pieces on their own or styled with larger floral arrangements. Alternatively, try our Yarra Scalloped Dip Bowl or Theo Wooden Platter—the scalloped edges of these pieces bring a sense of lightness to serving.”

“Check is another key theme this season, in different sizes, applications and colour combinations. For this collection, the design team exaggerated the checks, which you’ll see in the bed linen styles. Experiment with scale by pairing checks in different sizes, or layer different textural applications, such as the grid stitching of our Brae bed covers and the checkerboard pattern of our Alia bed linen range or Wilson Throw.”
